Studies on Heterosis, Residual Heterosis and Inbreeding Depression for Yield and Related Traits in Sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L.)

چکیده
Background: Selection of genotypically superior parents is most challenging task for the development potential hybrids. In conventional plant breeding, magnitude heterosis and inbreeding depression has been proved very effective in identifying vigorous parental combinations. Methods: The present investigation was carried out to study heterosis, residual forty sorghum crosses (F1s F2s) obtained by crossing eight restorer lines with five cytoplasmic male sterile Line x Tester mating design 2013 2014. Observations were recorded on morphological traits viz. days 50% flowering, maturity, height, flag leaf length, width, panicle weight,1000 seed weight grain yield per plant. Result: Among all crosses, ICSA467 UPC2 MR750A2 found be best characters. Inbreeding as significantly positive height indicates occurrence transgressive segregants F2 generation.

Heterosis and Combining Ability Studies in Sorghum (Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench) Over the Environments
In the field of plant breeding, the most important breakthrough has been considered as ‘heterosis’. Exploitation of heterosis on commercial scale and the systematic varietal improvement through hybridization are the main tools to increase the sorghum production. The success in the development of superior hybrids and/or varieties depends on the choice of parents for hybridization and amount and ...
متن کاملCorrelation studies for shootfly resistance traits in sorghum (Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench)
A field experiment was conducted to study the relation of different plant characters and shoot fly resistance in sorghum. Leaf glossiness showed high positive correlation with shootfly oviposition and dead hearts. The oviposition percentage on 14 and 21 days after seedling emergence exhibited significant positive correlation with dead hearts. Leaf trichome density on adaxial and abaxial leaf su...

Eighty-five sorghum (Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench) entries including 13 restorer-lines (lines), 5 maintainer-lines (testers), 65 F1 hybrids, and two controls, were grown at Muzarabani, Zimbabwe during the rainy seasons of 1986/87 and 1987/88 to study the combining ability and heterosis for diastatic activity. Grain samples were evaluated for diastatic activity, expressed in Sorghum Diastatic Uni...
متن کاملEffect of Integrated Weed Management on Yield, Quality and Economics of Summer Sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L.)
Sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L.) is one of the globally important cereal crop after wheat, maize, rice and barley. Sorghum is a unique crop among the major cereals and the staple food and fodder crop of the world’s poor and most food-insecure populations, located primarily in the semi-arid tropics. Sorghum is grown on 43.81 million ha area in the world, producing about 65.42 million tonnes grain wi...
متن کاملA next generation of studies: Heterosis and inbreeding depression
Heterosis or hybrid vigor is a phenomenon in which the F1 progeny is superior in characteristics than its inbred parents. Inbreeding depression refers to the reduced vigor in the offspring from matings involving related parents. The world’s most important grain crop, Zea mays exhibits significant heterosis and inbreeding depression, and despite billions of dollars of sales and investments in hy...
